Sentence

Terminal calendar month I showed how to unstuff a sentence by removing unnecessary words. This month I'll offer a quick-and-muddy guide to punctuating a sentence. Nothing that follows is meant to substitute for the nuanced explanations of what's normally called a writing handbook, the sort of volume that college students purchase in a first-semester writing course. These v rules though have the virtue of existence manageable, which is difficult to say of a 1,000-page book. In each paragraph that follows, the sentences illustrate the punctuation rule involved. Note that I'm fugitive nearly all grammatical terminology. Instead, I'one thousand emphasizing a pocket-sized number of sentence patterns.

Rule one
If your sentence begins with an introductory element, put a comma after information technology. Fifty-fifty if it's a short element, put a comma after information technology. In fourth dimension, yous'll exist putting this comma in without having to think near it.

Dominion two
Any element which interrupts the movement of the judgement, whether information technology's big or small, should be set off with commas. This judgement, similar the showtime, too has an element set off with commas. An element that appears at the end of the judgement should also be set off with a comma, every bit I'chiliad showing hither.

Rule three
Items in a serial should be separated with commas. What do I mean by "items in a serial"? Wine, women, and song. Life, dear, and laughter. Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young.

Rule four
Complete sentences that are joined by a coordinating conjunction (and, but, for, nor, or, so, yet) demand a comma before the coordinating conjunction. That might seem obvious, but this comma frequently gets left out. Putting information technology in makes a judgement more readable, and any reader appreciates that.

Rule five
Complete sentences that are joined without a coordinating conjunction need a semi-colon instead of a comma; the semi-colon shows the stop of 1 sentence and the beginning of the adjacent. Semi-colons are often followed past a connecting word or phrase; however, a connecting word or phrase is not necessary. Sentences joined with only a comma are called comma splices; they're among the most common errors that come in college writing.

(Note: In the next-to-final sentence in the previous paragraph, there'southward a comma after however considering it's an introductory element in the second judgement.)

Fixing comma splices requires familiarity with two recurring sentence patterns. The first involves a complete judgement, a semi-colon, and another complete sentence:

[complete sentence]; [complete sentence].

Some examples:

Your argument is persuasive; it addresses every objection I had.
His research newspaper is plagiarized; he is going to fail the class.
The novel is a relatively recent literary class; it's not near every bit old as ballsy poetry and lyric verse.

The second design to look for involves a complete sentence, a semi-colon, a connecting word or phrase, a comma, and another consummate sentence:

[complete sentence]; [word or phrase], [consummate sentence].

(Once again, the comma after the connecting word or phrase is appropriate every bit that word or phrase is an introductory element in the second sentence.)

Some examples:

I decided not to accept the job; instead, I'thou going to graduate school.
The proposal is flawed; as a outcome, we're sending it back for revision.
She did well in the form; in fact, she did much better than she had expected.

How tin can you tell whether you have 2 complete sentences or one sentence with an interrupting element at its cease? With an interrupting chemical element (something less than a sentence in itself), the parts of the sentence can be switched and still make sense:

I'll become to work, even though I'm sick.
Fifty-fifty though I'1000 sick, I'll go to work.

Merely with a second consummate judgement and a word or phrase such equally instead, as a upshot, or in fact, the parts cannot be switched and notwithstanding make sense.

Those are the basics of punctuating sentences with commas and semi-colons. I know from working with many students that any writer can get better when it comes to punctuation. The key is the ability to recognize a scattering of familiar patterns. Look for the patterns in your sentences, and yous too tin get better. With some do, you'll be able to run across the parts of your sentences falling into place, and punctuating correctly volition become, believe information technology or not, a addiction, one that yous'll exist happy to accept acquired.
